Colorizing Images in Photoshop

Have you ever seen a black & white an image that has splotches of a one particular color? Or perhaps only the image's subject is in color while everything else is in black & white? Well this is a guide on how to achieve this look using only photoshop.

1. Make a New Layer in Black & White

The first thing you will want to do is to duplicate your image, than put your duplicate layer image in black & white. You can do this by using photoshop's menu bar and clicking "image" than using the drop-down menu to click "adjustments" where you can click "desaturate". Now your image will look like this:

2. Layer Mask

Next, you will click on the "Layer Mask" button. This can be located in the very bottom right of your photoshop window, directly below your layers. The button appears to be a rectangle with a circle on the middle, loosely resembling a camera. You want to ensure that your black & white layer is already selected, then once you click on the button, a blank white layer should appear to the right of your black & white image. This is not a new layer, as it appears on the same bar as your black & white image.

3. Use your Paint Brush Tool

First, I recommend inverting your layer mask which can be done with the shortcut "command i" on a mac os. This will turn your layer mask black. Next, you will click on your paint brush tool (located on your vertical left menu). Then you are free to paint as you would like! Your black paint brush, will colorize your image, by revealing the layer below (your original image). And using your white brush will paint your image back to black &white.

Heres a Quick Tip —  You can easily switch back between the black & white brushes by clicking x.
